Nele Martens - chant
Guy Roelofs - bouzouki, nyckelharpa, claviers
Jenny van Diggelen - flute, tin-whistle, chant
Raquel Gigot - accordéon diatonique
Jiroh Matulessy - guitare, bouzouki

DUTCH WORLDMUSIC
TJANE is the new group from Guy Roelofs, who at the turn of the millenium filled theatres with his project “Cadans der getouwen”. Including, at that time Gerard van Maasakkers, Rudy Velghe and Raquel Gigot; with Tjane Guy Roelofs has again succeeded in assembling a line-up of top Dutch, and Flemish musicians.
In the music of Tjane influences from pop. Jazz and traditional music are fused to form a new type of Dutch Worldmusic.
The driving force behind traditional music is that it is able to move with the times. By incorporating modern genres a new sound is created. Tjane does not attempt to imitate traditional music, but breathes new life in to our earlier music with interesting, contemporary arrangements. While it is common for other countries to be occupied with their musical heritage, in the Netherlands is this rarely the case. In this way Tjane could be considered to be the Dutch version of groups such as Capercaillie, and Clannad whose music is rooted in their Celtic cultures.
During the 2006/07 season Tjane has performed at the prestigious Dranouter Folk Festival and in the theatres of Veldhoven (Schal), Ijmuiden (Wittetheater), Hengelo (Rabotheater), Zundert (Cultureel Centrum van Gogh), Vlissingen
(Arsenaaltheater),Brielle (Brestheater) and Geertruidenberg (Schattelijn).
TJANE is;
Nele Martens; Vocals
Jenny van Diggelen; Wooden flute, Tin whistle and Vocals
Raquel Gigot - Accordion
Guy Roelofs - Bouzouki, Nyckelharpa and Keyboards
Jiroh Matulessy - Guitar, Bouzouki
PRESS REVIEWS’
Goe Vollek – March 2006
“MARK”is the first outing on cd by the Dutch/Flemish group Tjane. It has to be said immediately; this is quality! Initiator and leader is bouzouki and keyboard player Guy Roelofs, known from his project “Cadans der getouwen”, a collection of spinning and weaving songs whereby Gerard van Maasakkers, Rudy Velghe and Raquel Gigot from
Orion took part. Roelofs has chosen a beautiful selection of little known songs from the Low Lands, proving once again that there is still plenty of valuable material to be uncovered.
Vocals are beautiful, not least thanks to the contribution of Sylvie Moors, a solid Flemish performer who came to the group’s attention through Philip Masure.
The arrangements are fresh and modern, with the right dose of percussion without spilling over to cumbersome folkrock. This is folkmusic in a contemporary form. Instrumental numbers are very enjoyable; a Finnish traditional, and some scottisches, polkas and waltzes composed by Roelofs himself. An excellent variation of songs and music provides for the perfect balance. A group with great potential.
COUNTRY GAZETTE
The end result is beautiful; the songs can be followed word for word and the polkas, scottisches, waltzes and kringdances are a sign of the growing popularity of the “folkball”.

FOLKTRIBUNE
Let there be no doubt about it; this is mastercraftmanship. This cd has excellent vocals and superb musicianship. But there is more. The top quality of this cd is the enormous variation in song choice, the rich arrangements and the broad range of emotions. A fantastic debut by Tjane.

FOLKFORUM
Tjane takes dusty traditional Dutch ballads and makes them once again worthy of listening to. Their recipe; crisp vocals in an often upbeat folky sound, playful swinging rhythms and injections of modern genres. Sometimes Guy Roelofs adds newly self-composed intermezzos.
With such a targeted shot of adrenaline he transforms the traditional ballad “ Er zoude een meisje gaan halen wijn “in to a beautiful folkhit. Roelofs plays even more with new melody lines and rhythms. This works very well. Hereby, the “Rozendans “receives quite a transformation. What an infectious swing!. Here, Roelofs uses bodhrán. In “Ontwaak”the warm voice of Sylvie Moors and the lyrical flute-playing of Jenny van Diggelen are immersed in a funky bath of rhythms. So also the scottisches, somewhat mellower, but still with a funky swing. Inventive drumming and loops give the “Kringdansen”a modern beat which then develops into a more traditional sounding dance from the collection “Maidens Dances “ by Nico G. Vlot. But, the infectious beat draws one to the dancefloor “How about an andro, then’?

NET 5 LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
The big man behind Tjane is composer/arranger Guy Roelofs. Through his approach the emphasis lies in contemporary arrangements. On the debut album “Mark”these elements are brought beautifully to the foreground. Such as the opening track, "Kiremandee" and also “Er zoude een meisje”, “Ghij sotten “ and “Luilak”. The album also contains a number of polkas, waltzes and kringdances. “Mark”presents a collection of pleasant and, sometimes very recognisably Dutch folkmusic. Not least thanks to the beautiful voice of Sylvie Moors.
